About The St Margaret Mary Shade Project
|
The St Margaret Mary Shade Project is a volunteer effort to provide shade in the school yard to protect students from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
Spearheaded by the students of the school's Environment Club, the project has received the support of many in the community, including:
- York Region Public Health
- TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment
- St Margaret Mary Catholic School Council
The project involves a number of activities, including:
- planting a variety of mature native species trees
- installing large retractable awnings
- creating a naturalization area of tree seedlings
In addition, the school purchased a portable shade shelter, with removable sides that may be used for outdoor events at the school. Travelling sports teams also use the shelter; taking the tent to sporting events protects students from the sun and rain.
We have also engaged in sun safety awareness activities, including a Sun Safe Fashion Show staged by the Student Environment Club. |
